Where my urban populists at?!
I haven’t the vocab sufficient to convey how disgusted I am with this reported legislation.
Cab drivers who use their cellphones (even via bluetooth headset!) or any other electronic devices “are about to get slapped by a sweeping overhaul of TLC rules, which will forbid the use of all electronics while cabs are in motion.”
Outrageous. Why deny our cab drivers the opportunity to multi-task in a time of recession, or speak with loved ones while on shift?! Conspicuously absent from the Post’s report is any indication that the streets are unsafer when a cab driver is engaged on the phone, and explicitly absent are any statistics that might substantiate such a claim.
Rather, what appears to be the chief concern arises from the elitist, selfish passengers–be they the Wall Street titans who collapsed said economy on my dime or their obnoxious, spoiled offspring–who simply don’t want to be bothered by the sound of conversation in a different tongue.
No, they’d rather subject the drivers to their own pithy, meaningless phone conversations about “who’s going down on whom” in the world of finance (in the case of the titan) or in the cavalierly sexual sense (in the case of the titan’s bratty child). They’d rather watch the same content over and over on their in-cab television without any background noise to distract them.
This is nothing more than rampaging tyrannical bureaucracy. So on behalf of all the populists too busy to stand up on your behalf: sorry drivers. Thanks for all you do.
